The Passion according to Carol Rama
GAM - Galleria Civica d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Turin presents the great international retrospective dedicated to Carol Rama (Turin, 1918-2015) conceived by the Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA) and the modern Musée d'Art de la Ville de Paris (MAMVP), organized by the MACBA and co-produced with MUSÉES PARIS / MAMVP, EMMA - Espoo Museum of Modern Art, Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin (IMMA) and GAM - Galleria Civica d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, turin.
GAM, who co-produced the show, was chosen as the last seat of the route to complete the route in Turin, the city where the artist has lived and worked, and in the museum where many of his masterpieces are kept.
Already in 2004, the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo major exhibition devoted to Carol Rama. This exhibition marks the international consecration. It includes about 200 works spanning seventy years of his career (1936-2005) in the largest exhibition devoted to this artist to date.
The "advantages of being a woman artist," according to the artistic feminist group Guerrilla Girls, are "to know that your career could explode when you have eighty. Be sure that any kind of art you do will be called 'feminine'. "
These predictions were fulfilled in the case of Carol Rama. Long ignored by official art history to the challenge launched by her and for the dissident representation of female sexuality, his work was recognized internationally only in 2003, when he received the Golden Lion of the Venice Biennale. Carol Rama is an artist indispensable for understanding the changes in the pictorial representation in the twentieth century, and the work of artists such as Cindy Sherman, Kara Walker, Sue Williams, Kiki Smith and Elly Strik.
The exhibition opens on 11 october.
